On Wednesday 31st August everyone at NBC School took part in a day of giving back to our community. We all had lots of fun. Our class did gardening and washed cars. I liked the way we worked together as a team. We all had lots of fun helping people. During the term we had been learning about all the important work of volunteers. NBC Talent Quest
I entered the Talent Quest with Grace and Rein. We performed the dance Domino by Jessie J. We spent a week and a few days practicing in Room 8 during morning tea and lunch time. For our outfits we all wore denim shorts and singlets with a glitter pattern on our cheeks. When practiced at Grace's place as well. We made up a lot of new moves and tried to make it as exciting as possible. We were really nervous on the day and when we got up on stage the butterflies had gone. Grace did slip and fall! But she got up and carried on like nothing had happened. We had a great time at the Talent Quest and I'm looking forward to trying something new for next year.

Arthur's Pass Camp
On the first day of Camp we went to see the Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall. There are 328 steps to climb to get to the viewing platform. It was tiring but at the end we had a good time. Mrs Harliwich took photos of the waterfall with all of us in front of it.

Taniwhas
On Monday 4th April, Room 2 started to make Taniwhas using rubbish to form a collage. The rubbish we used was chippie packets, muesli bar wrappers, raisin boxes and lots of other rubbish from our lunch boxes. First we started with a piece of newsprint. We drew the face, body, arms, legs and tail. After we did that we picked out the rubbish with the colours we wanted to use. Then we cut the rubbish into small pieces and glued in to out shape that had been traced onto cardboard. When all the taniwha was covered and dried Mrs Harliwich went around the outline with black liquid PVA to make them stand out. When they were dried they were cut out and put up on the wall.

Give a Day
On Wednesday 31st August, Room 2 had a GIVE-A-Day. We did this because we thought it would be nice to wash the staff cars. Our principal was pretty happy when hers was done.
On this day we learnt how to wash cars properly. By making sure we wet the car before scrubbing, because there is a chance that the paint may get scratched. We all got really wet that day. A few boys wrung out their tea towels and flicked us girls with them. It really hurt.
After we finished the cars, they looked great and we were puffed out. It was a really fun day.

RWC Nations Day
In Term 3, Thursday 6th October, we celebrated a Nation Food Day. As part of our study about countries who took part in the Rugby World Cup 2011. We had to find out all about the country - where they are in world, all about their culture and what sort of foods they eat. The country I studied was Canada. I did some research and found out that they eat fudge. For our celebration we had bring a type of food from their country. It could be an entree, a main or dessert. There was lots of types of food and it was very good.

Ferrymeade
In Term 3, 2011, Room 1 & 2 went to Ferrymeade. We learnt all about all the old things that were sustainable. Things like a washing mangler - sustainable man power. We had to dress up like children who lived in the early 1900s. We had doing manual chores and lots of washing and cleaning. It was fun, we got to wash clothes, scrub wooden tables, wash dishes, clean floors and much more. We all had lots of fun.

Learning to do CPR
On Wednesday 23rd November, we learnt how to perform CPR on a plastic doll. It was hard to remember to hold the head back so that the neck was straight. After everyone had done the breathing and compressions we were given a plastic bag with goodies to take home.

Being ECO Warriors
In Term 1, 2011 Room 2 had to learn their chores around the school for the rest of the year. Room 2 are in charge of all the caretaker type jobs like emptying rubbish bins, compost bins, and looking after the worm farm. To help us learn our chores, teams in our class were given the task of making an advert. So we used cameras and wrote scripts and filmed our ads. This year I have learnt a lot about the environment - like how to take care of the worms and how they can help our plants grow.

At the start of the year. My face was a little different than it is now. Mrs Harliwich took everyone's photo. It is amazing how much you can change during the year.

We practiced in our school grounds, learning how to start and turn, then stop. By the next day we were ready for the road. We put on our fluro vests and tightened our helmets and learnt how to bike safely on the road. After we completed the training we received a certificate and earned our bike license.

St John - Safe Kids
On Wednesday 23rd November,
Jessica from St Johns came to Room 2 to teach us when to call the ambulance and CPR. We practised answering the questions from the emergency operator, why to call an ambulance and being sent for help. We also learn to put someone in the recovery position. We had to practice this a few times to make sure our patient was comfortable. Once we had all got that and Jessica was happy.
We learnt how to perform CPR on a plastic doll. It was quite hard to do the compressions and breathe into the dummie. You had to remember to hold the head back so that the neck was straight. After everyone had done 5 sets of 30 compressions and 2 breathes, Jessica got us together again to go over what we had just learnt.
D – Danger
R – Response
S – Send for help
A – Airways
B – Breathing
C – CPR
Olivia thanked Jessica for coming and she gave a Safe kids bag to take home.
